Ten years ago I bought one of those amplifiers off TV. Squealed every time I turned my head near my collar and it put me off the whole idea. My son talked me into trying again. These are a different animal. No squeal, since January not once. And it isn't just louder, it's clearer. The old one made everything bigger including the refrigerator and the traffic. These leave the background alone and bring the voices up.

My husband had the TV on 38. I'm not exaggerating, I checked it once. The neighbors could hear the game through the wall. He's been wearing these since May and it sits around 14 now, which is where I have it when I'm by myself. He hasn't said anything about it and I haven't made a thing of it. Phone calls are the big difference

Face to face I was managing because you get good at watching mouths without realizing it. The phone is different, you have nothing to go on. I'd gotten to texting people I would normally have called, including my own brother. Called him last week and we talked for forty minutes and I didn't ask him to repeat anything.
