I have the PRSI contributions so I was entitled to the Treatment Benefit grant, which I thought would sort me out. It's a few hundred towards each aid. The private fitting I was quoted was €2,700 for the pair. So the grant covers a fraction of it and I'm paying the rest myself, and that's before you get to the appointments. HSE audiology here has a waiting list I'd be on for a year and a half. I bought these instead to see what you actually get for the money. At home very good, on the phone very good, in a restaurant I can hear the person across from me, which is the thing I told the fella in the shop I wanted.

I'd stopped going to things

This is a bit personal but I'll put it in case it helps someone. Over about two years I stopped going out. Not a decision, I just kept finding reasons. The big family dos first, then the coffee morning, and then I copped on that I hadn't had a proper conversation with anyone in a fortnight. It's easier to stay in than to keep asking people to say it again. My son got me these in May. Took about four days before it felt normal, your own voice sounds odd at first, apparently everyone gets that. I rang my sister last week and we were on for over an hour. I'm back at the Tuesday group.

Wore them to my grandson's wedding

My daughter ordered these about six weeks before my grandson's wedding because she was fed up of me missing half of everything. I wasn't convinced and I'll be honest I only put them in on the morning to keep the peace. I heard the whole of the best man's speech. I haven't managed that in years, normally you laugh when everyone else laughs and hope for the best. The volume was fine straight out of the box, we didn't change a thing. Middle tips, which is what's already fitted. Comfortable all day and all evening, in from nine in the morning until midnight and my ears weren't sore. If you're putting it off, get them before whatever it is you're dreading, not after.

Four months and nobody in the parish has noticed

The main thing for me was not wanting the big beige yoke behind the ear. My brother has those and you'd see them from the far side of the room. These sit down in the ear and my hair is short so I was expecting someone to say something. Four months and not a word. Sound is good, better in a quiet room than a noisy one obviously, but I can hear the caller now which I couldn't before. Charging is easy, they go in the case beside the kettle.

Try the other tips before you give up

The size they come fitted with was too small for me and I got a bit of whistling when I put my glasses on. There are spare tips in the packet, three sizes, and swapping them takes about ten seconds. Went up a size and it's been silent since. Worth saying because if I hadn't tried I'd have sent them back thinking they were faulty.

No batteries, that was the whole reason

I've arthritis in both hands and the reason I never got hearing aids before is those tiny batteries. My mother had them and I remember her on the floor looking for one that had rolled off. These have none at all, they sit in a little case and the case plugs in like a phone. In at night, ready in the morning. I haven't touched a battery since March. Took me about a week to get them in properly, I won't pretend day one was easy. I can do it without the mirror now.

Im deaf in one ear, properly deaf, and these did NOTHING for it. Doctor told me afterwards nothing at this price would have. Should have asked first instead of ordering off an advert. Got a refund.

Sorry this wasn't right for you. Certus One is designed for mild to moderate loss. For profound loss on one side you'd be looking at a CROS or bone-conduction device, which has to be fitted by an audiologist — no over-the-counter aid at any price would have helped. Your refund shows as completed.
