What the complaints have in common
Read end to end, the low-star reviews fall into three groups, and only one of them is really a complaint about the product.
1. Hearing loss outside what the device is for
The most common one-star review is from someone with severe, profound or single-sided loss. No over-the-counter device at any price is built for that: the category is capped on how much it can amplify, deliberately, so it cannot damage hearing further. Certus One is for perceived mild to moderate hearing loss in adults 18 and over. If you have lost hearing suddenly, or in one ear only, see a doctor before you buy anything from anyone, including us.
2. Noisy rooms
The second group bought it expecting restaurants and crowded rooms to be solved. They are not. Reviewers consistently describe good results one-to-one, on the phone and in a quiet living room, and much smaller gains in a pub or a busy restaurant. That gap between quiet and noise is the honest limit of the price bracket, and it is the single most useful thing to know before ordering.
3. Fit
The third group could not get a comfortable seal. Twelve tips in three sizes ship in the box, and a good number of reviewers say the device only started working properly after they changed tips, which is the first thing to try. For a minority of ear canals none of the tips work, and that is a return.

Im deaf in one ear, properly deaf, and these did NOTHING for it. Doctor told me afterwards nothing at this price would have. Should have asked first instead of ordering off an advert. Got a refund.

Sorry this wasn't right for you. Certus One is designed for mild to moderate loss. For profound loss on one side you'd be looking at a CROS or bone-conduction device, which has to be fitted by an audiologist — no over-the-counter aid at any price would have helped. Your refund shows as completed.

I have gone back and forth on this review for a month. The facts: television better, telephone somewhat better, one to one conversation better in a quiet room. Group conversation no better at all, and outdoors on a windy day worse than nothing because of the rush of noise. My loss is on the moderate to severe line and I suspect that is the explanation, and the doctor said as much when I saw him afterwards, which I should have done before ordering rather than after. Three stars because they have genuinely helped in the house and I am keeping them, but somebody in my position should know what they are getting and not read only the five stars.

That's a fair review. Directional microphones help in a crowd but nothing worn in the ear solves a loud room with a match on — anyone telling you otherwise is selling. If you haven't tried the noisy-room setting, it's worth a go.

The left one stopped charging after five weeks

I want to be fair because up to that point I was going to write a five star review. Comfortable, discreet, and a real difference on the telephone, which was why I bought them. Five weeks in, the left one stopped taking a charge. Sat in the case overnight, no light, nothing. I tried the other slot, I tried a different plug, I cleaned the contacts with the brush like the card says. Rang them and they were perfectly polite and offered a replacement or a refund and I took the refund because by then I had lost confidence in them lasting. To be clear, the refund was quick and nobody argued with me. One star is for the product failing inside six weeks, not for how they dealt with it.

I have never been able to tolerate anything in my ear. Earplugs, earphones, the lot. I gave it eleven days because I wanted it to work and by the end of it I was taking them out at lunchtime every day. That is me, not the product. The return was straightforward and the refund was in my account in under a week, which is why it is two stars and not one.

You're right that we don't stream calls. It's on the spec page but it clearly isn't hard enough to find, and that's on us. Certus One is an amplification device, not a headset.
