Ten years ago I bought one of those amplifiers off the telly. Squealed every time I turned my head near my collar and that put me off the whole idea. My son talked me into trying again. These are a different thing. No squeal, since January not once. And it's not just louder, it's clearer, if that makes sense. The old one made everything bigger including the fridge and the traffic. These leave the background alone and bring the voices up.

My husband had the telly on 38. I'm not exaggerating, I checked. The neighbours could hear the footy. Phone calls are the big one

Face to face I was managing because you get good at watching mouths without realising. The phone's different, you've got nothing to go on. I'd got to texting people I'd normally have rung, including my own brother. Rang him last week and we talked about forty minutes and I didn't ask him to repeat anything.
