• Not a clinic. Certus does not employ audiologists, does not run hearing tests and does not fit devices. Nobody here is a clinician, and no page on this site is medical advice.
• Not a prescription device seller. Certus One is not programmed to an audiogram.

What the device category actually is

Over-the-counter hearing devices became a formal regulated category in the United States on 17 October 2022, for adults 18 and over with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, and explicitly not for severe or profound loss (US Food and Drug Administration). That boundary is the single most important thing to understand before buying anything in this category, from us or anyone else. It is also the reason for most of the one-star reviews on our complaints page: people whose hearing loss was outside the range the category is built for.

Do devices like this actually work?

The independent evidence is more encouraging than the price difference suggests, and weaker than any seller would like to admit. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis pooling 15 studies and 774 participants found no significant difference between self-fitting over-the-counter devices and audiologist-fitted prescription devices on patient-reported outcome measures (De Sousa et al., 2026). The same authors rate the certainty of that evidence as low, note that most trials ran between 10 days and 8 weeks, and call for larger independent studies. That is the honest state of the evidence: promising, not settled, and not a claim that Certus One specifically matches a fitted pair.

The claims we refuse to make

No cure. No treatment claim. No “medical grade”. No “clinically proven”, because we do not own a clinical study. No invented certifications, no rosettes, no awards nobody gave us, and no “#1 rated” anything. If a number appears on this site about the wider market, it carries a source link and the date it was checked.

When to see a doctor instead of buying anything

Hearing loss that came on suddenly, hearing loss in one ear only, ear pain, discharge, dizziness, or tinnitus in one ear are all reasons to see a doctor or an audiologist rather than order a device online. Sudden hearing loss in particular is treated as urgent. We would rather lose the sale.

Why the reviews sit on their own domain
